A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
