Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
