PSG Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.
The Parisian club has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.
The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.
The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the scoring early on.
Yet, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.
In a breathtaking twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital leveler in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to complete a convincing penalty victory.
The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.
