Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.
